日?中喪葬儀礼の比較研究?
1 開催目的
本研究会の目的は、第１回?神道?日本文化と外来宗教思想研究会?（平成15年7月15日開催）の報告にある通り（リンク：第1回「神道?日本文化と外来宗教思想研究会」報告）、日本文化と渡来文化との関わりについて理解を深めようとするものである。
今回は田沼眞弓氏を招へいし、外来文化の受容形態を通して見える日本文化の特徴を教示していただくこととした。我々の祖先が外来文化に面したとき、何を取って何を捨てたのかを研究することは、日本人の価値基準を知る上で有効であり、文化研究においては確立された手法の一つである。こうした手法は、中村元著『日本人の思惟方法』をはじめ様々な業績を生んできたが、本会では、日?中喪葬儀礼の比較を通して、古代日本人のケガレ観?皇位継承法の特質などを学ぶこととする。

5-1 発表概要
先行研究によれば、奈良時代中期以前には、吉凶判然の意識、即ち葬儀と祭祀のけじめがなく、両者は奈良末期になって漸く分化した、とされてきた。田沼氏は、この吉凶分化の時期を検討した上で、さらに論を展開した。
(1)大化以前
大化以前の喪葬儀礼と他の諸儀礼との関係を調べてみると、皇極朝以前には、喪葬と即位の関係に2通りの形態がある。A?崩御→殯→埋葬→即位?の場合と、B「崩御→殯→即位→埋葬」の場合である。この2通りの手順がいかなる理由で使い分けられたのかは判然としないが、そのときの政情に合わせてA?Bのどちらをも取りえたことが指摘できる。次いで、この間の殯と神祭りとの関係を見ると、殯期間中に即位や神祭りが行われている。以上より、皇極朝以前には、吉事と凶事が時間的に並行して行われていたと言える。
(2)大化以降
ところが大化以降になると、喪葬と即位は混在しなくなる。天武天皇崩御時には、殯を終えて埋葬後に次期天皇（持統天皇）の即位が行われ、この形態が以後の範となった。また持統天皇崩御後には、殯期間中に伝統的神事は廃された。文武天皇崩御時にはじめて凶服期間が設けられ、釈服後に即位の形となる。一方で、殯は極端に短縮化した。
以上より、7世紀から8世紀初頭にかけて喪葬と諸儀礼とが弁別されるようになったことがわかる。つまり、吉凶分化の時期は先行研究の示すところより、1世紀ほどさかのぼる。
(3)平安時代
平安時代になると、凶服中に即位をしないことは慣例化しており、即位を急ぐ場合の方策として践祚儀がとり行われた。また、1年の服喪期間を13日に短縮する?以日易月?制も採用された。これにより、1.皇太子は先帝崩御の日に践祚。2.先帝は1週間から10日の殯の後に埋葬。3.同日、皇太子は倚廬殿に渡御。4.13日目に常の御在所に還御。5.大祓の後即位。という手順が定まった。服喪期間は13日に短縮されたが、その後、心喪の礼がとられ、常儀に戻られるのは丸1年後。この心喪中には祭祀?朝賀等の諸儀礼は停止された。
次いで、漢土の喪葬儀礼の推移が紹介された。
(4)前漢文帝以前
喪礼と即位は区別され、?崩御→埋葬→即位?の順で行われた。
(5)前漢景帝以後、後漢末まで
喪礼と即位は混在し、?崩御→即位→埋葬?の順で行われた。即位は先帝崩御即日の柩前即位。殯は平均32日前後で、踰月埋葬とした。
(6)晋
先帝崩御当日の柩前即位と踰月埋葬を継承。新帝は服喪中の住まいである倚廬にこもった。本来3年の服喪期間を?以日易月?制によって1～2ヶ月に短縮。本来あるべき残りの期間は心喪とした。
(7)唐
先帝崩御当日の柩前即位を原則とし、1週間以内に即位が行われた。殯は儒教に従い7ヶ月前後。服喪も3年を採用するが、?以日易月?制によって短縮化し、27日となる。以後心喪。7ヵ月後に埋葬の後、常儀に戻る。
以上より、喪葬の形態が定型化する平安時代を基準に、日本の喪葬を漢土のそれと比較すると、以下の特色が見出せた。日本の喪礼は漢土のそれを学んで作られたと考えられるが、日本では殯期間が極端に短く、喪葬と即位のけじめがある。服喪期間も短縮化している。そして漢土喪礼の一般的特質である即日即位?踰月埋葬?既葬除服?3年服喪を採用せず、むしろ晋の時代に始まる以日易月?心喪?倚廬を取り入れた。こうした選択における価値基準として、吉凶判然意識の台頭や皇位継承法の相違が指摘できる。

吉凶判別意識の背後には日本独特のケガレ観が想定できる。儒教イデオロギーの下では親の死にケガレを認めることはないが、日本では事情が異なり、凶礼としての喪葬と嘉礼としての即位が峻別された。
○皇位継承法の相違…
漢土では前皇帝の徳を引き継ぐため、柩前即位が行われたが、日本では徳の継承より皇室の血筋が重んじられ、また死者へのケガレ意識も強かったため、柩前即位は取り入れられなかった。日本で生前の譲位が一般的となることにも、喪葬と即位の混在を防ごうとする意図が含まれているかもしれない。
5-2 成果と課題
古代国家が漢土の制度に学びつつ諸儀礼を斉整していく際、吉凶判然意識と皇位に対する意識が諸儀礼のあり様に反映していったことを見た。これより、古代の日本人が自らの実情に合わせ、主体的に文化摂取を行ってきたことが確認できた。
発表後の質疑応答においては、大化以前のケガレ意識が問題とされた。興味深くはあるが、史料の制約上判然としない点である。そもそもケガレ意識のような民族感情は端から当人たちに明確に意識されるものなのか。あるいは異文化を体験することで、初めて意識化されるものなのか。異文化と民族感情との関係については、不明な点がまだ多い。渡来文化の受容と国民性との関係は尚も問われるべき課題である。
